Import and export registration
Get set up to import or export: CRA import-export account, CBSA CARM portal and customs basics.

Before your business can bring goods into Canada or ship them out, a few registrations need to be in place. We set up your import-export program account with the CRA, help you register in the CBSA's CARM Client Portal, and explain how duties, taxes and customs brokers fit together.
Once you are trading, we make sure the GST/HST you pay at the border is claimed back properly and your books track landed costs correctly.
How it works
- Review: what you will import or export, from where, and how often.
- Register: import-export account with the CRA and your CARM Client Portal set-up.
- Connect: link your customs broker and set up how duties and taxes are paid.
- Account for it: landed costs, duties and HST recorded properly in your books.
Good to know
Each business must register itself in the CARM Client Portal; a customs broker cannot do it for you, but can be given access afterwards. We guide you through it.
Who it's for
Businesses starting to import inventory or equipment, online sellers buying from overseas suppliers, and Ontario companies beginning to ship goods to the United States or other countries.
More questions
Do I need a customs broker?
Not always, but most small importers use one. You still register your own business in the CARM Client Portal and can then give your broker access.
Can I claim back the GST/HST I pay at the border?
Usually yes, as an input tax credit if your business is registered for GST/HST and the goods are for your business. We make sure it is recorded correctly.
Do you calculate duty rates?
Duty rates depend on the exact classification of your goods. We work with your broker on this and record the costs properly in your books.
