CRA drop boxes are closed for good. Here is how to send documents now

For years, many Canadians dropped their paper returns and cheques into a CRA drop box. That option is gone: the CRA permanently closed all 45 drop box locations on May 29, 2026.
Why they closed
The CRA points to three reasons: far fewer people were using them (drop box submissions fell about 78% over six years), items had to be transported to processing sites, which slowed things down, and there were security problems such as break-ins and vandalism.
How to send things to the CRA now
- Online (fastest): file returns electronically and upload documents through CRA My Account or My Business Account. The CRA calls this the fastest and most secure option.
- Through your accountant: an authorized representative can submit documents for you using the CRA's Represent a Client service.
- By mail: paper returns, documents and cheques can still be mailed through Canada Post.
How to pay
- Online or mobile banking
- Pre-authorized debit set up in your CRA account
- The CRA's My Payment service
- In person at a Canada Post outlet with a QR code, or at your bank with a remittance voucher
Our advice
If you received a review letter or need to send receipts, upload them online rather than mailing them, so there is a record of exactly what was sent and when. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, we can submit documents on your behalf as your authorized representative. See our CRA support service.
