You now need a CRA sign-in to register a business number

October 14, 20261 min readCRA updates

If you are starting a business in Canada, one of the first steps is getting a business number (BN) from the Canada Revenue Agency, along with program accounts such as GST/HST and payroll. Until recently, anyone could use the CRA's Business Registration Online (BRO) service without signing in.

That changed on July 14, 2026. You now need to sign in to a CRA account to use BRO. From there you can register for a business number or add program accounts such as GST/HST.

Why the CRA made the change

The CRA says signing in first helps confirm your identity before you register and reduces the risk of unauthorized access and fraudulent registrations. Fake business registrations have been used to commit fraud, so this extra step protects genuine business owners too.

What it means for you

  • Sole proprietors: you will typically sign in through CRA My Account with your own credentials.
  • Corporations: the person registering needs their own CRA sign-in. Plan for this before incorporation day so you are not held up.
  • Using an accountant: a representative can register for you once authorized. Ask your accountant how they will handle it.

Tips to avoid delays

  1. Set up your CRA account early, since the first sign-in can involve a security code sent by mail.
  2. Have your incorporation documents, addresses and the names of directors ready.
  3. Decide which program accounts you need (GST/HST, payroll, import-export) at the same time.
